• There were 279 DBRFs (Dog Bite Related Fatalities) between 1979 and 1994. That averages out to almost 19 people per year.
• There were 11 recorded DBRFs in 1995 and 14 in 1996.
• 80% of the DBRFs in 1995 and 1996 were children.
• 72% of the DBRFs in 1995 and 1996 were male.
• 70% of the DBRFs in 1995 and 1996 occurred on the dog's property.
• Intact Male Dogs are the most likely to bite.

Tips for Dog Owners

• Spay/Neuter your dogs.
• Keep your dog secured on your property at all times. Never let your dog roam free. This is as much for his protection as the general public.
• Never chain your dog.
• Socialize your dog to people of all ages.
• Train your dog in Obedience.
• Take IMMEDIATE action if your dog begins to display aggressive behavior. Do NOT assume that your dog will "grow out of it". See a professional Behaviorist or a Veterinarian IMMEDIATELY.
• Never leave a child alone with a dog regardless of breed or size. Infants have been killed by Pomeranians and Yorkies!
• Do not use force with your dog, such as spanking or alpha rolls. Aggression breeds aggression! 
  
  

Tips for Children

• Never approach a strange dog.
• Always ask the dog's owner before petting.
• When given permission to pet a dog, pet the dog under the chin and not on top of the head.
• Never run from a dog. Running excites a dog to chase!
• Stand still like a statue if a strange dog approaches you, and do not scream or run.
• If a dog knocks you down, cover your face with your hands and stay as still as possible.
• Never wake a sleeping dog.
• Never approach a dog who is eating.
• Never approach a dog with food in your hand.
• Never approach an adult dog with puppies.
